It is said that there used to be a shrine called Ikazuchi Jinja in this place. This park is so quiet that you forget that you are in the center of the metropolitan city. However, the number of visitors increase when cherry blossom viewing season.
The origin of Raijin Yama: When the plague outbroke in the Heian period, people built Ikazuchi shrine to pray for decreasing the infulence of the epidemic. Since that time, peole started calling this place “Raijin Yama” which means the mountain of the god of the thunder. Over several centuries, many people had made a visit to the shrine to pray for their quicker recovery from illness. However, after the war, the shrine was united with Hikawa shrine and turned into the current park. |
